Passion for Sport

Roedean is becoming increasingly competitve in a wide range of sports, including Cricket, Volleyball, and Football, all of which have been introduced to the school recently, on top of our three major sports, Hockey, Netball and Swimming.  Roedean is very excited about its inspirational flood-lit all-weather pitch, 5-a-side football pitch and the resurfacing and floodlighting of existing courts which opened this year. This transformational investment has already improved the standard of sport at Roedean through greater training and playing time and the girls' confidence in matches is growing. We are able to field three plus teams in our major sports at the younger age-groups, showing our strength in depth, becoming feared adversaries in the area. The girls are relishing the buzz that comes from being successful and working well as a team, and this positive atmosphere is spreading.

As well as enjoying success in team sports at school, Roedean has a number of exceptionally talented sportswomen, including national champions in Athletics, Table Tennis, and Street Dance. In addition, a good number also represent the county in sports such as Netball, Water Polo, and Cross Country.  The Sports Scholars have a dedicated programme which runs throughout the year, including masterclasses and workshops with Sports Physios, nutritionists, and high-level coaches, in order to give the girls the best possible chance to develop their talents through focused and targeted commitment.

But Sport at Roedean is for everyone. To ensure that all our girls can have a passion for sport, and will continue with it later in life, we endeavour to offer the widest range of activities and opportunities possible.

  • We understand that exercise complements all other aspects of school life, and try hard to make sure that they can all co-exist well.

  • From our elite-level sportswomen to girls who just enjoy getting involved, we have weekly fixtures to ensure that there is a strongly competitive edge at all levels, and a programme of house matches and competitions which enable every single girl to take part in sport.

  • Whether part of one of the many sports squads, clubs, the Sport Scholars’ Programme, or community partnerships, sport is a vital part of life at Roedean and the wider community.

International Honours

Our sports department has recently expanded. The specialisms offered are netball, hockey, football, tennis, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, golf, cricket, squash, dance, and off-site horse-riding and sailing.

Our sports offer also includes  badminton, fitness and conditioning, martial arts, yoga, trampolining, volleyball, and Zumba. We are constantly expanding to include those activities which the girls would like to pursue.

Roedean's Olympic Gold Sports Ambassadors

Roedean is incredibly proud to announce that both Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh will be the School’s Sports Ambassadors for the next two years, over which time the girls will benefit hugely from their regular visits. This announcement coincides with the launch of our new outstanding floodlit all-weather pitch. It has already been wonderful to see so many girls of all ages benefitting from having the pitch at the heart of the School this term.

GB Hockey players, Kate and Helen won Olympic Gold in Rio 2016. Kate captained the team for 13 years and represented her country 375 times, and Helen has played in the England and Great Britain teams since 1999. As Olympic champions in 2016, they became the first same-sex married couple to win Olympic Gold. They are not only sporting icons, but also exceptional role-models.

Helen Richardson-Walsh came to Roedean on 28 September to officially ‘open’ the pitch, along with the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Dee Simson. To reach the very top of your sport requires incredible focus and dedication, and Helen spoke to the Sports Scholars and the 1st XI players over lunch about the ups and downs of her journey from playing at her first Olympics in Sydney in 2000 to winning Bronze in London and then Gold in Rio 2016.

Roedean is remarkably fortunate to have Sports Ambassadors of the calibre and pedigree of Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh, and to be working with two iconic GB sporting heroes - we cannot wait to see the incredible impact of having such a facility on site, and of working regularly with Kate and Helen.
