Sixth Form - Life outside class

The goal for all of us at Roedean is to help our girls achieve the best possible academic grades. But we also want them to confidently leave for university armed with an understanding of the way the world works. We will particularly help develop these skills in the Sixth Form.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (D of E) provides an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for many Roedean girls. Importantly, universities value a record of D of E achievements.

In the Sixth Form, girls work towards the Gold Award by undertaking community service, improving or taking up a skill, participating in a physical activity and taking part in an expedition, in recent years in the south of France.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise is based on the principal of Learning through Doing. Working with volunteers from the Brighton business community, the girls develop entrepreneurial flair, team spirit, leadership qualities and business acumen. In practical terms, company members learn how to manage meetings, plan their time effectively and take control of their finances in pursuit of a profit.

Over the years Roedean Young Enterprise companies have won a host of awards (eight in 2008 alone!) and produced a reliably healthy return on their share capital.

Voluntary Service in the Community

Our sixth form girls can also participate in the Voluntary Service in the Community (VSC) programme, a commitment of 1 – 2 hours each week, which can count towards the D of E award. It is a brilliant opportunity to meet Brightonians, as placements include old peoples’ homes, schools for the disabled, nursery schools, cub scouts, brownies and charity shops.
