Shape, Rattle and Roll - Discovery Day 2010

Discovery Day

7 October 2011

'Classic and Ancient'

Roman centurion

Over 40 excited and enthusiastic girls from schools in London and the South East spent a day at our Classic and Ancient Discovery Day on 7 October 2011 enjoying the day as a trainee Roman soldier.

The girls found out how tough Roman soldiers were in the Classics department, tried traditional Olympic sports with the PE department and discovered the haunts of the Ancient Romans with the Modern Foreign Languages Department.

The lovely, sunny day was completed with a trip down Roedean’s secret tunnel to the beach - a highlight, of course, for all the girls.

Discovery Day allows Roedean to get to know the participants better during a fun-filled yet educational day and is a vital part of the general admissions process.

Many thanks to our Classics, PE and Modern Foreign Languages departments for creating such an imaginative and entertaining programme.

'Shape, Rattle and Roll'

Over 40 girls from 20 schools in London and the southeast spent the day at Roedean for the 'Shape, Ratttle and Roll' Discovery Day.

Taking the Fibionnaci numbers as a starting point, the girls worked together in groups to create and manipulate shapes in different media and scenarios.

Trampolining and gym was such fun, [writes Esmee] - we played with ribbons and then did some trampolining. We learned to make different shapes like a pike, a straddle and a tuck and then put them together to make own own routine.

In Art, [writes Beth], we made own pieces of work consisting of coloured triangles and hexagons on a dark background, which impressed my dad so much that he has decided to frame it. In the Maths room we were given squared paper. First we drew circles using a compass and then drew lines through the circles to make interesting shapes.

After lunch we went down the secret tunnel at the bottom of the Roedean grounds, [writes Eleanor]. It wasn’t dark in the tunnel, so Hermione and I counted the steps and there were over one hundred! The tunnel led straight to the beach so we could walk along the undercliff. It was a fabulous day!
