Roedean pre-prep pupils in assembly

Roedean's pre-preparatory school

The job of independent pre-prep schools is to provide a stimulating environment for developing skills in reading, writing, maths, music, craft and art, design technology and drama.

Most children will achieve Early Learning Goals during the Reception year and then be gradually introduced to Key Stage One. At this time they start French and Spanish lessons and get to grips with their first musical instrument – a descant recorder. They also start yoga, dance and gymnastics.

Every child copes with their new-found independence in a different way. Some children are very excited by school; others need a little convincing!

However, in due course we hope that they will leave the pre-prep school polite, curious and excited about learning.

The school day

Doors open at 8.30am, and the morning session starts at 8.50am. The children stop for lunch at 12noon. Afternoon sessions finish at 4pm and after-school care is available until 5.45pm. We start giving a few simple homework tasks in Reception - reading, spelling and recorder practice, for example.

In the early days, pre-prep schools warn that your son or daughter may come home tired and unresponsive. Please don’t worry – this is normal as they have a lot to take in and get used to.

Uniform

The junior school uniform for boys is simple grey trousers, white shirt and navy jumper. The girls wear a Campbell kilt, white blouse and navy jumper. We expect all our children to be smartly dressed and well-groomed – at least at the start of the day!

If you are interested in the pre-prep school, start by visiting us. Come to one of our Open Days or arrange an individual visit.
