Tiny child wondering what might happen next

Autumn 2009

The Observatory Science Centre

Year 3 at Herstmonceux ObservatoryAt Herstmonceux there is the observatory science centre. It has lots of domes and telescopes which are huge because it used to be an observatory. We saw one of the telescopes and went inside one of the domes.

The forces workshop was very fun and exciting. Everybody had a go at doing something. If you put a piece of paper on top or under a heavy thing then it fell straight to the ground, but if you dropped a piece of paper on its own it floats because of air resistance.

At the bridge workshop we built a truss bridge and we all got to walk over it. We also built an arch bridge which was held together by force. It was really scary to walk over. The truss bridge is called a truss bridge because it is made out of triangles.

Newhaven Coastguard

Year 4 at Newhaven CoastguardOn Tuesday 29 September Year 3 went to the Newhaven Lifeboat Centre.

We learned about the two different lifeboats: the inshore lifeboat and the all weather lifeboat. Lili got to wear a lifeguard’s T shirt and shorts and a red cap. The RNLI stands for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. It saves around 22 people a day and about 4 are children. When we went inside the boat it was very cosy and it had a downstairs. There were 6 seats in the front and it had about 4 in the back. Downstairs it had 12 seats.

When they’re not working they have different jobs like a teacher, shop keeper, police and firemen and a Head teacher. Margaret was the guide, she was very nice. She told us a lot of things about lifeguards. Margaret gave us some small information booklets. They have saved 40 people in Newhaven and 50 in Brighton.
