Nursery provides the basic foundation for all future learning in an atmosphere that is relaxed, caring and secure. At Roedean, our private, day nursery school has just 20 places so we can provide just such an atmopshere.
Because every child grows at a different rate, we are very flexible with how much time individual children are at school for, particularly when they first start. Those who are just three often begin with Monday, Wednesday and Friday, gradually increasing when they realise what they are missing on Tuesday and Thursday.
The Nursery participates in the Free Nursery Education Grant Scheme.
Like many Private nursery schools, Roedean boys and girls follow the Foundation Stage curriculum which is based around learning through hands-on play. Activities – which sound like a lot of fun - include clay and playdough modelling; dressing up and role play; puzzles, stories and rhymes; sand and water play; cookery and craft.
The focus is also preparing children for entry to the Reception class. All children begin the reading process and we expect them to be emergent readers and know the basics of number work.
Weekly swimming lessons start in Nursery.
Doors open at 8.30am, and the morning session starts at 8.50am. The children stop for lunch at 11.50am. Nursery pupils may stay for lunch, in which case you can collect them at 1.10pm. Afternoon sessions finish at 3.10pm and after-school care is available until 5.45pm.
Milk and water is provided for morning break time. Your child may bring a carton of juice or piece of fruit. Either way, labelling is essential in order to avoid tears over who had the spotty banana or the big red apple!
There is no formal uniform for Nursery children. Ideally, your child would be dressed in practical clothes which you won’t mind getting a bit messy. We can provide a waterproof apron.
If you are interested in the private nursery school, start by visiting us. Come to one of our Open Days or arrange an individual visit.
