The message that I took away from two days of intense lectures at the Boarding School Association’s annual conference was encapsulated in a simple word, love.
From the exploration of the chemical wiring of the teenage brain to the values which should lie entrenched within our boarding school structures, the idea of selfless, caring love for the individual came through loud and clear.
Dr Andrew Curran, a practising paediatric neurologist, kept his message simple: young people learn through emotional engagement with their teachers. If lessons promote positive emotions with the young people they will learn well. If the teacher has taken time to understand the pupil, this leads first to self esteem, then self confidence, and being engaged in lessons.
In a session focusing on UK boarding schools, Tony Little (Eton) encouraged headteachers to develop the language of love within schools: it is through the positive environment that those engaged in boarding can create, that the whole child learns. Such attention to growing teenagers can transform lives: high exposure to positive values are life changing. For this reason, Little urged the heads to choose their staff with immense care and articulate clearly the values which are central to their schools.
