Life outside class

“Lower Fives’ thoughts turned to the weekend and the forthcoming social with Harrow. For once, work was pushed straight out of our minds. Instead we were thinking of what to wear.”

Life at Roedean is an exciting whirl of activity. If it is not prep, it is the team play; if it is not revision, it is a sports match. Depending how they feel, the day girls can either go home after lessons and their extra-curricular commitments, or stay with the boarders for supper, supervised prep and evening activities.

Applying classroom learning in Years 10 and 11

Life outside the classroom in the Middle School focuses on developing the girls’ enthusiasm for their subjects, which from experience, leads to strong achievement in GCSEs.

This could be investigating the effects of tourism on Swanage during the Geography field trip or nibbling spiced gingerbread at the Christmas markets on the German exchange. It might be practising Spanish at a Brighton tapas restaurant – or in an authentic tapas restaurant on the Easter exchange to Spain.

Then at the end of Year 11, the post-GCSE programme is a moment to take a breath and take stock.

  • Kensington agency Red Leopard run a ‘Dress to Impress at Interviews’ session.
  • ISCO run a Finance Day covering the essentials of setting up a small business and personal budgeting.
  • A local cookery school runs a basic ‘Ready Steady Cook’ course which focuses on preparing simple, cheap and healthy meals.

But don’t worry – there’s no shortage of fun in the Middle School. There are socials not only with Harrow, but also Tonbridge School, and carefully increased freedom. In Years 10 and 11 our girls are trusted to stretch their wings at the marina (Year 10, in threes) and Brighton (Year 11, in pairs) without accompanying staff.
