Roedean's First Netball Team were winners of the Sussex National Schools Netball Tournament last week, playing nine matches in a round robin tournament [writes Mrs Goulet].
They will now represent Sussex in the South Round in Southampton on Saturday 22 January.
Our game plan was to do the basics well, working the ball in to the shooters with short sharp passes as the wind was a big factor. The team really adapted well and Mrs Carnaghan and I were delighted!
In the team were Edwina Wilson, Gabby Tomlinson, Ope Salau, Cailtlin Boyland (Capt), Sharon Jacobs, Harriet Scott and Florence Lloyd. Fifteen year old Phoebe Tomlinson, who normally represents Roedean in the U15 team, was brought in to the squad as an adaptable reserve. Phoebe looked comfortable in all of the matches she played and is an exciting prospect for the next round of the competition.
Head Girl Sharon Jacobs stepped nervously into the shoes of Nkem Ike Nwabuoko who was ill in bed - a huge task for Sharon as Nkem is part of the South Region Training academy and a key defending player. She did not disappoint however, and stepped up to the mark to play really strongly throughout the day.
Other teams at the tournament were, Brighton College, Sackville, Worthing College, Mayfield, Imberhorne, Burgess Hill, St Bedes, Ardingly (coached by Old Roedeanian Helen Sandiford), and Hurst who will join us in Southampton as runners-up.
