On 26 August the Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance Service hosted a ‘Thank You’ event at Roedean for their fundraising volunteers. It costs approximately £1.7 million to provide Sussex and neighbouring Surrey with an emergency helicopter service and this cost is met almost entirely by the generosity of the public.
A doctor, paramedic and pilot spoke about the service the Air Ambulance provides. Responding swiftly to 999 calls, air ambulances deliver a medical crew to the scene of an accident or medical emergency and transport patients to the nearest major hospital or specialist unit, in a fraction of the time taken by a land ambulance. The crew mentioned the numerous lives they have saved through this work, and the many gifts they receive from the grateful people they have helped.
The volunteers were treated to a delicious afternoon tea in Horizons, before watching a dramatic helicopter fly-in onto the cliffs of Roedean. The afternoon was greatly enjoyed by all, and the Air Ambulance Service will be back at Roedean in the near future to hold a fundraising event.
