With the mouth-watering menus of scrumptious healthy food on offer at Roedean each day it is no surprise that Jon Hawley, Head of Catering and his team have got yet another accolade to add to their list of achievements.
Roedean has, this month, been awarded a Gold Standard Healthy Eating Award by Brighton and Hove Council. In order to achieve this level of award, caterers must prove that a consistent 75% of their menus offer healthy choices as set out by the Food Standards Agency. Congratulations to Jon and his team!
Jon explained; “it is very important to me and the team to provide a benchmark for the parents and for them to see how healthily their children are eating. We take our role in providing a balanced diet of tasty and nutritious healthy food extremely seriously and we are even one of very few independent schools who participate in the Food for Life scheme.” http://www.foodforlife.org.uk
The Catering team also works together with dietician Suzi Grant, a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists who helps to ensure that the menus which are changed on a termly basis to fit in with the weather and availability of seasonal produce, are varied and balanced.
The majority of produce is locally sourced and all meat and eggs are free range. Fish is so fresh that it can end up on the counter within 6 hours of being caught.
The Catering team runs an open door policy whereby pupils from the Food Committee are involved in setting the menus and they are always happy to hear any feedback and suggestions from staff and parents.
