The sun came out over this year’s, and my final sports day, after seven years at Roedean [writes Astrid Ainley, 2009-10 Games Captain]. On Saturday 26 June parents, students and staff gathered around the athletics track in the brilliant sunshine to watch Teams One, Two, Three and Four for the last time, before Teams revert to Houses in September.
The 15 track and field events all ran smoothly, and culminated in the hugely popular relays towards the end of the afternoon. 28 relay teams took part, composed of 112 girls, which resulted in an exciting and well fought end to the team aspect of Sports Day.
The final event was the hotly anticipated Golden Mile, in which the staff, parents and Old Roedeanians compete against the leaving 62 students. In 2009 the staff team won. This year we were lucky enough to field two teams so we felt we were in with a good chance of a victory. Despite strong competition from all five teams, the 62 A team reigned triumphant in the end!
Congratulations go to Team One for taking home the Sports Day Trophy, very closely followed by Team Four (2009 winners). A big thank you to the sports department for another really enjoyable day.
I have now passed the baton on as sports captain to Caitlin Boyland and I wish her the best of luck!
