Off By Heart Shakespeare

14/09/2011

Three lucky Upper Four pupils are set to represent Roedean at the BBC Learning’s Off By Heart Shakespeare competition in London on November 1st 2011.

Last year in Drama lessons Lower Four pupils were required to learn a Shakespearean monologue or soliloquy ‘off by heart’. A competition was then held in the theatre during lessons from which Emily Bishop, Kelly Chan and Beth Thomas were chosen based upon the following criteria:  recitation, voice, physicality and potential.

Each of the competitors will have to perform a famous Shakespearean speech they have learnt from a set list of choices.  They will also have the fantastic opportunity to join a behind-the-scenes acting workshop.  They will experience Shakespearean language like never before: they will learn how to breathe it, feel it, vocalise it and make it their own.

The BBC regional heats will allow for eight finalists to represent their schools and battle it out on stage in a bid to be crowned Schools Shakespeare Champion in an exciting televised final.
