“Fun Mathematics Roadshow” came to Roedean the last Monday of the term. Dr Mark Holland from Exeter University brought a variety of “hands-on” puzzles and thought provoking activities.
Girls had about 30 puzzles to choose from and they paired up to tackle them. Some puzzles were designed to develop spatial awareness and geometric reasoning, some to improve their deduction skills, some to help with abstraction and some of them provided exercise with numbers. The “hanging postcard” proved to be the most popular puzzle. All girls from Upper Three (Year 7) to Lower Five (Year 10) took part.
Here is what the some of the Upper Threes thought about the day:
“We thought it was a great challenge to test our ability of Mathematics.” Harriet and Phoebe
“We never knew maths could be so fun” Ella and Amelia
“We enjoyed our schools maths fun day. We found the activities challenging but fun.”
Honor and Imogen
“We learnt a lot from this experience and it was amazing because it was maths in a fun way” Tara and Bella
