ESOL Forum

The 2011 ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Forum took place at Roedean School on 27 May, 2011.  Thirty two learning support teachers came to Roedean from twenty one schools across the south east region.  The topic of the forum was “Dyslexia and Multilingualism” and our guest speaker, Liz Horobin, Project Manager of the Dyslexia and Multilingualism project based at Bath Spa University, led the morning session.   She helped clarify in our minds the nature of learning difficulties students could experience in their studies and encouraged participants to consider how such difficulties might affect the learning of overseas students studying here in UK schools.  The afternoon workshop sessions allowed visitors to explore further the complexities involved in assessing students and identifying specific learning needs beyond those of learning a second language. Participants shared experiences and strategies for support.  Other workshops provided an opportunity for those involved in preparing students for the IELTS test (International English Language Testing System) to share ideas and good practice.  The Learning Support Department at Roedean thoroughly enjoyed hosting this event which gave the school an opportunity to bring together so many local colleagues to extend their understanding of the complexity of dyslexia and multilingualism.
