A group of fourteen 6th Form and U5 Biologists attended a conference about Gene Therapy and Stem Cells organised by the British and European Societies for Gene and Cell Therapy (ESGCT and BSGT) at the Brighton Centre last month.
The conference was designed to inform members of the public about gene and cell therapy and to allow the public to talk directly to the scientists involved in this area of research. A wide range of talks were given from leading experts including Professor Lord Robert Winston.
As part of the event, Roedean was invited to provide a team of scientists to take part in a genetic fingerprinting race organised by the Naked Scientists group from Cambridge University.Emma Alexander, Morgan Bonson, Keri Chapman, Mildred Mak, Grace Sorrell, Grace Swann and Iona Tarbet with Miss Harrison as their staff helper showed exemplary team work and a highly competitive spirit and won the race to extract and match DNA samples. They beat teams from Bedford, Eastbourne and Hurstpierpoint colleges to win an iPad and a bag of scientific goodies for the school. Prizes were generously donated by Bio-Rad.
