First day at school

Although most children come into school quite happily on their first day, please don’t feel guilty or embarrassed if your son or daughter decides at the last minute that they do not want to go! In a tearful parting, the kindest thing to do is to leave quickly as a prolonged farewell tends to add to the problem. Once the son or daughter has been distracted, all is usually fine within five minutes.

New children find the first weeks in school very busy and very long. They will be tired by the end of the day and may not want to talk about what has gone on in school. This is quite normal and you can take heart from the fact that your son or daughter has given us his/her best during the day.

Encouraging reading

  • choose a time when you and your son or daughter are relaxed and not tired
  • sit down somewhere comfortable and quiet where there are not too many distractions
  • five precious moments are better than twenty pressurised ones!
  • have a brief chat about the cover of the book, the title, perhaps the author and the illustrator
