As part of the curriculum, Religious Education (RE) should promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and social development of the pupils. Roedean Junior School is of a Church of England foundation and its ethos is Christian, though respect is accorded to all faiths. The Christian ethos underpins the aims and philosophy of the school in all areas of its life.
RE should help pupils begin to: -
In the Foundation Stage the RE curriculum comes under the 'Knowledge and Understanding of the World' and the 'Personal, Social and Emotional' Early Learning Goals.
Children will be assessed through the Early Learning Goals as they progress towards gaining an awareness of the cultures and beliefs of others, a sense of community and the impact of their actions on others.
The following skills and processes are reflected in the teaching of RE at KS1 and KS2: -
Investigation – this includes discussion, whole class teaching, visits and visitors, use of relevant books and artefacts to encourage investigation and the ability to ask relevant questions and know how to use different types of sources as a way of gathering information.
Interpretation – through class teaching, participation in assemblies, stories, visits and visitors to develop the ability to draw meaning from artefacts, works of art, literature, symbols and religious texts.
Reflection – in all areas of school life to develop the ability to reflect on feelings, relationships and experience and an understanding of God's creation with awe and wonder.
Empathy – in all areas of school life to develop the ability to consider the thoughts, feelings, experiences, attitudes, beliefs and values of others and the ability to see the world through the eyes of others, and to see issues from their point of view.
