PE

Physical Education is valued and promoted throughout the Junior School through participation in activities which are appropriate to the age of the pupils.

Aims

  • To promote physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. 
  • To encourage each pupil to fulfil their potential in a variety of physical activities.
  • To develop co-ordination and gross motor skills.
  • To develop hand/eye co-ordination.
  • To respond through movement to a variety of music.
  • To enable pupils to work co-operatively as part of a team. 
  • To be aware of safety issues in any activity.
  • To develop confidence and self discipline by fulfilling challenging tasks. 

Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage, the Physical Education policy is delivered through the 'Physical Development' Early Learning Goal. Fine and gross motor skills are practised and refined through daily activities and children's progress is measured against the Early Years objectives.

Keystage 1

Pupils will be taught swimming and water safety by the Senior School PE staff from Nursery upwards. PE lessons will be taught by the class teacher. The programme will include:

  • Basic skills using small apparatus
  • Basic gymnastics using large apparatus
  • Responding to music/dance

Keystage 2

PE lessons will be taught by the Senior School PE staff. The programme will include:

  • Ball skills  (netball)
  • Hand/eye co-ordination (tennis, rounders)
  • Physical agility (gym, athletics)
  • Movement to music (dance)
  • Water confidence.
