Aims
To give a firm foundation for a life-long appreciation of music.
Objectives
- To develop aural awareness and a good all-round musicianship.
- To develop a good technique on the recorder and violin/cello.
- To develop a basic musical knowledge and vocabulary.
- To listen and develop an understanding of different kinds of music.
- To play music by ear and from different forms of notation.
- To improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas.
- To identify musical elements to communicate mood or effect, time or place.
- To perform individually or in a group to an audience.
Implementation
Music is covered in the Foundation Stage under the 'Creative Development' area of learning. The children will be given opportunities to progress towards the Early Learning Goals
In KS1 and KS2 pupils will be given opportunities to: -
- Be actively and confidently involved in music making through a variety of roles, individually, in groups and as a whole class, as performer, composer, director and audience
- Have access to a variety of percussion instruments to explore different sounds
- Have an understanding of basic musical theory using staff notation and grids
- Listen and appraise recorded music from different times and cultures
- Select and organise musical ideas from compositions
- Learn the recorder, reading basic notation
At KS2 these opportunities will be extended to include:
- Progress at their own rate both theoretically and practically.
- To join extra musical activities e.g.: choir, orchestra, recorder ensemble, ocarina group, string quartet.
- Learn basic string technique in a group.
- Explore composition, structure and notation including through use of
computer programmes.
