Learning through real life experiences

Maths

Aims

To provide an environment which promotes confidence and competence in number and measure.

Objectives

  • To encourage mathematical language and forms of communication
  • To teach children about number, the number system, methods of computation and recording

To provide children with opportunities to develop:-

  • Mathematical strategies and reasoning
  • An understanding of measure and shape
  • The skills needed to collect, present and interpret numerical data

Foundation Stage

Children in the Nursery and Reception classes follow work towards the Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy Early Learning Goal which they are expected to achieve by the end of the Foundation Stage. This area of learning includes practical counting, sorting, matching, seeking patterns, recognising relationships and working with numbers, shapes, space and measures.

Keystage 1 and Keystage 2

he objectives in the Numeracy framework are used to inform planning. Teachers may also choose to follow Hamilton Trust Scheme, Cumbria Grid for Learning and the MEP to support planning. The principal scheme used to Strategy is used to support mathematics in class is Abacus.

  • Lessons are based on clear learning objectives, high expectations and good progression through the School.
  • There is an emphasis on oral and mental calculation with a careful introduction of informal and later, formal written methods of recording and calculation as understanding develops.
  • Children experience a wide range of mathematical activities including practical work, games and real life problems.
  • Children’s progress is monitored, records kept and targets set.
  • IT is used to support children’s development in Mathematics where appropriate.
