Design and Technology

Aims

To enable children to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make products. The teaching of technology should enable pupils to make sense of and to take their place in an ever changing technological society.

Objectives

Design and Technology will be developed as an activity based experience for all pupils. The skills and confidence appropriate to manipulating a wide range of tools, materials and components will be developed.


Pupils will be able to develop testing and evaluation procedures for their completed solutions.
Suitable contexts will be used to develop Design and Technology capability drawn from: the school, recreation, the community, business and industry, the home, the caring society.
    

Foundation Stage 

In the Foundation Stage, Design and Technology is taught under the 'Knowledge and Understanding of the World' area of learning. Children investigate objects and materials, they build and construct with a wide range of objects, selecting the tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join the materials they have chosen.

  • Pupils will be given opportunities to develop their design and technology capability through a wide range of differentiated assignments in which they design and make products.
  • The practical tasks set for children will be focused to develop and practise particular skills and knowledge. 
  • Opportunities will be provided for the children to work with a wide range of materials and components.
  • Opportunities will be provided for children to apply skills, knowledge and understanding from the programme of study of other subjects including Art, Mathematics and Science.
  • Pupils will be given opportunities to access technology; and appreciate its power and limitations.
  • Pupils will be encouraged to see technology as part of their everyday lives.
  • Pupils will be given opportunities to develop their skills of problem solving through designing, making and evaluating; both co-operatively and independently.
  • Pupils will be provided with strategies to learn to apply new skills.
