Art

Aims

The children should begin to investigate, make, explore and develop ideas as part of a life-long process.

Objectives

To develop: -

  • Visual perception 
  • Creative, imaginative and practical skills
  • An understanding about the different ways in which ideas, feelings and meanings are communicated in visual form 
  • An appreciation of the work artists, craftspeople, designers and their peers in a variety of genres, styles and from different cultures historical and geographical
  • The selection and use of materials, tools and techniques for practical work safely 
  • Confident expression of ideas and opinions, using art vocabulary and knowledge to support those views
  • Knowledge and use of a wide variety of media  

Foundation Stage (Nursery/Reception)

Art is covered in the Foundation Stage under the 'Creative Development' area of learning. The children will be given opportunities to work towards the Early Learning Goals. Their area of learning is divided into areas of: -

1. Exploring media and materials: - To explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in two and three dimensions.

2. Imagination: - To use their imagination in art and design, music and dance, imaginative and role play and stories.  

3. Responding to experiences and expressing and communicating ideas.  To respond in a variety of ways to what they see, hear, smell, touch and feel.  To use a wide range of materials, suitable tools, imaginative and role play, movement, designing and making and a variety of songs and musical instruments.

KS1 and KS2 pupils will be given opportunities to:

  • Experience and appreciate different approaches to art, including those that involve working individually, in groups and as a whole class
  • Develop skills for recording from direct experience and imagination
  • Experiment with and develop control of tools and techniques for a range of art and craft opportunities including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture
  • Review and modify their work as it progresses
  • Respond artistically to work done by  artists, craftspeople and designers
  • Contribute their own work to school displays.
