Junior School Pupil

PSHE

Aims

We aim to provide all children with a full range of opportunities enabling them to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the importance of personal and social development, health and well-being and citizenship, both in school and as a preparation for an active role in the future.

Objectives

Children and young people need the self-awareness, positive self-esteem and confidence to:

  • Stay as healthy as possible
  • Keep themselves and others safe
  • Have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships
  • Respect the differences between people
  • Develop independence and responsibility
  • Play an active role as members of a democratic society
  • Make the most of their own and others' abilities.

Foundation Stage

This area of the curriculum will be delivered through progression towards the Early Learning Goals in Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Individual targets are set and monitored. Children's progress is measured against the Stepping Stones.

Keystage 1 and Keystage 2

In KS1 assemblies and general expectations in classes reinforce basic social skills. Circle times in literacy and mathematics provide daily opportunities for speaking and listening to each other with respect and working co-operatively. Topics covered throughout the year provide opportunities to develop the PSHE programme in specific fields. A dedicated weekly assembly is for Circle Time.

In KS2 PSHE is mainly delivered through a structure of weekly assemblies on a 3 year rolling programme. The themes of these assemblies are followed up by class teachers at a level appropriate to the age and stage of their classes.

Aspects of PSHE are also covered in other curriculum areas e.g. sex education (Year 6 Science), appreciation of other cultures (Year 5 India) and in the Religious Education programme.
