Roedean girls have achieved the best ever GCSE results only a week after the school recorded its best ever A Level grades. Over 45% of all GCSE grades have been awarded A*, and 75% at A*-A is the highest ever number of grades achieved at this level on results’ day. The school is delighted to have these two remarkable sets of results both at GCSE and A Level. This underlines the points made in Roedean’s outstanding ISI Inspection report in May about the girls’ positive and pro-active approach to their learning and the high quality teaching.
Roedean congratulates in particular Ada and Anni on the exceptional achievement of 11 A* grades. We are also pleased that over one fifth of the cohort achieved 8 A* grades or more, and 41% were awarded only A*-A grades, showing great strength in depth. We are very proud of all those who worked extremely hard for their GCSEs, and now have a string of very good grades as they move into the Sixth Form. These girls will be joined by talented girls from different schools, including a number from local schools in the state sector who have won our successful Brighthelm Awards.
This year’s excellent GCSE results are the product of a concerted effort on the school’s part to empower the girls to strive for the very best, by developing their self-confidence and challenging them to realise their fullest potential. It is no coincidence that many of the girls in the GCSE cohort have strong talents in other fields: nearly 10% are post-Grade 8 musicians, one plays football for the county, another has just achieved exceptional success in her RAD Advanced 2 ballet exam, another performed at Glyndebourne this year, and one spent a week volunteering in a hospital in Ethiopia over the summer. We believe strongly in our ethos of a holistic approach to education, and we are confident that the girls’ engagement with a whole variety of other activities beyond their academic work only serves to improve their grades. Mr Blond, Headmaster, congratulates all the girls on their GCSE results: ‘I am absolutely delighted that this group of girls stuck together through thick and thin, and worked hard to achieve these fantastic results. Whilst we celebrate academics, what is truly remarkable are the strong friendships they have developed, and I know that they will be just as delighted with each other’s successes as their own.’
Roedean is preparing the girls to make their mark in the world, and this is just the first stage for these GCSE girls, who will no doubt also perform well in the Sixth Form. Of those who received their A2 grades last week, 66% are going on to Russell Group universities, all 4 applicants for highly competitive courses in Medicine will begin their courses in October, and 3 girls will be taking up their places at Oxbridge. Every single girl benefits greatly from the exceptional provision at Roedean. With a £½ million refurbishment of the Sixth Form facilities over the summer, and a flood-lit astroturf in the near future, the school combines excellent academic achievement with opportunities to excel in a range of co-curricular activities, as well as wonderful facilities and buildings – a Roedean education truly is a unique experience.
