Competitive sport is a key part of the Roedean experience
As Dorothy, Penelope, and Millicent Lawrence noted in 1885:
“We wish in the first place to give physical education and outdoor exercise their due place in every girl’s life.”
Roedean benefits from a stunning location. But, as we all know, our micro-climate here on the clifftop means having to play against the elements, as well as our opponents!
The all-weather pitch will mean fixtures will rarely be cancelled due to the weather and we will not have to pay for the hire of, and travel to, off-site pitches. Having a floodlit pitch will also allow the girls to train and play in the evenings over the winter.
This transformational investment in sport will also deliver a 5-a-side football pitch, the resurfacing of and new fencing for existing netball and tennis courts, the floodlighting of half of those courts, one brand new tennis court, and major improvements to our visitors’ car park and pathways.
To deliver Roedean’s first all-weather pitch and all of these additional enhancements to sport, we need your help.
It’s Time for Sport
In recent years, we have invested over £15 million in improving, updating, and refurbishing the teaching facilities and the boarding houses. This has been achieved without a major appeal. We now want to build a top quality allweather sports pitch, provide a new 5-a-side football pitch, resurface all our existing courts, floodlight half of these, and improve parking and pathways. This investment will allow us to train, compete, and perform at a higher level, and will ensure a complete programme of sport for all current and future girls, not just those in the top teams. These facilities will make an inspirational difference to sport. But to deliver Pitch Perfect, we need your help.
An all-weather pitch? Finally! This is fantastic news for sport at Roedean. It needs to happen and is long overdue”
Phoebe Tomlinson, Captain, Roedean XI, 2014
The all-weather pitch will be suitable for hosting a full range of sports including Hockey, Lacrosse, Cricket, Athletics, PE, fitness sessions and after school clubs. Combined with the new half-size football pitch, the resurfacing and floodlighting of existing courts, and general site improvements, this is a transformational investment in sport. Great care and consideration has been taken to address the local landscape, deliver high quality yet cost effective facilities, and respect the environment through energy efficiency.

A History of Philanthropy
Roedean has been fortunate to benefit from the generous support of parents, ORs, staff, and friends of the School throughout its history. Two successful appeals in the 1990s made the construction of the Theatre and the new Science wing possible.
We now need our community to pass on the baton of philanthropy to this generation to improve our sports facilities and build this all-weather pitch.
Planning permission for the project has been granted. Our contractors have already begun and can, with your support, complete the full specification by the summer of 2018. Delivering this transformational investment in sport will inspire many future generations of Roedeanians. It will only be possible with the generous support of parents, ORs, and friends of the School.
The project will cost £2m to complete. The School will fund three quarters of the cost from school resources set aside through careful husbandry. In order to complete Pitch Perfect, the appeal needs to raise £500,000.
Pitch Perfect Q&A
Why does a school like Roedean need to fundraise?
Roedean is not wealthy. Fees are kept low so the annual surplus is only enough to fund maintenance and small projects.
I already pay or have paid fees. Why should I give more?
Facilities enjoyed today relied on past appeals. Each generation has traditionally made a contribution to provide additional and better facilities for the next.
What can I do to help?
Get involved! Please give, and encourage others to support. Contact Mark Taylor or Ross Barrand for more information.
Name that Pitch!
Providing these inspirational new facilities for our girls can only happen with your help. Please sponsor and name your very own area of land on the new all-weather pitch by sponsoring a ‘pitch plot’ of your chosen size. A permanent, formal recognition board will note every donor (unless you wish to remain anonymous). Donors will also receive a certificate of plot sponsorship. Those who give £10,000 or more will have the opportunity to engrave one of the paving stones on the path to the pitch. For more information on recognition at each level, please contact Mark Taylor.
An all-weather pitch is great news. The Roedean teams should do really well with such wonderful new training facilities. I’m sure it will be very popular.'

Giving over time
You can choose to give with a single payment or phase your donation over a number of years. Gift Aid helps to make being a major donor* possible. If you pay tax at 40%, you can give a donation of £5,000 (including gift aid) and the net cost will be £3,750, which is just £18 per week over four years.

*All gifts of £5,000 are classed as major donations. Major donors automatically become life members of the Roedean ‘1885 Society’. Society members are invited back to School annually to an event hosted by the Headmaster in recognition of their generous contribution.
There is also an opportunity to name, in perpetuity, the all-weather pitch, which will remain at the heart of sport and be of benefit to all future generations of girls at Roedean. Please contact Mark Taylor for more information.
We appreciate that some members of our community may prefer to support other development projects or Bursaries, for which the demand is always high. Please contact Mark Taylor or Ross Barrand via firstname.lastname@example.org or 01273 667588 if you would like to discuss this further. Thank you.
